5 Important Tips to Caring For Gemstone Jewelry

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Many women love to add a touch of color to their wardrobe, and there is no better way to do so than with gemstone jewelry. By definition, a gemstone is a mineral or stone suitable for use in jewelry after having been cut and polished. Available in virtually every color imaginable, gemstones can add the perfect compliment to your favorite pieces of jewelry. Below are five tips to caring for both precious and semi-precious gemstone jewelry:

* Amethyst jewelry should be stored out of direct sunlight. Why? Believe it or not, this beautiful gemstone can actually fade if exposed to the sun for long periods of time. Therefore, it’s advisable that you store your amethyst jewelry in a gift box, jewelry case or other dark space in order to help retain its vibrant coloration.

* When cleaning gemstone jewelry, consider a homemade remedy to help keep your accessories shining. A combination of soap and water can cleanse most gemstones safely, and may be less harsh than commercial jewelry cleaners.

* As you clean your gemstone jewelry, pay close attention to the utensil(s) that you choose. Avoid any brush or other product that features bristles, which may scratch the surface of your gemstone. Instead, use a soft cloth that has no rough areas which could potentially damage the stone.

* Before using any type of commercial jewelry cleaning product, always pay close attention to the directions. The reason is because not all cleaners are safe for all gemstones and, in order to maintain the beauty of your jewelry, it’s important to carefully read the instructions. Whether you are removing tarnish from your sterling silver gemstone jewelry or simply adding a little shine to your collection, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and consider alternative methods for cleaning your jewelry if necessary.

* When storing gemstone jewelry, make sure to place it in such a way that it will not easily come into contact with other pieces from your collection. Why? If your jewelry were to get tumbled around, the gemstones could be scratched or even broken. Many natural gemstones are durable, but they can still be scratched and even damaged if not properly cared for. If you want to ensure the protection of your jewelry, store each piece in a small zip-tight jewelry bag when it is not being worn. If you are a wearer of sterling silver, this storage method will also help to slow the tarnishing process.

Now that you know how to care for your gemstone jewelry, it’s important to know where to find the greatest deals. Many fantastic bargains can be found online, and especially if you know where to shop. Online retailers often grant coupons, shipping discounts and even sale prices to virtual visitors who browse their internet shop. If you’re in the market for a new piece of gemstone jewelry, consider choosing a retailer who specializes in your metal of choice. If you are a sterling silver wearer, for instance, look for a business that caters to those who enjoy the beauty of this precious and affordable metal. With this approach, you are sure to find the best selection and plenty of colors to suit your style.

How to Insure Your Jewelry Collection

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

If you are the proud owner of a significant jewelry collection, it may be a wise idea to insure your valuables. Like any other item within your household, it is important that your jewelry be covered in the case of theft, loss or other misfortune. Although no amount of money can replace your prized collection, it can help you to rebuild it.

First and foremost, insuring your jewelry collection involves talking to the provider of your home’s insurance policy. In most cases, this would be your local insurance agent. It’s important to find out whether or not jewelry is covered under your current policy and, if it isn’t, how to best go about getting the proper coverage for your collection. In some cases, you may be required to purchase a rider policy especially for your jewelry.

As you already know, having an established value is important when it comes to purchasing insurance coverage. When it comes to jewelry, you may wish to consult with a professional jewelry appraiser, especially if your collection is of significant value. With a written appraisal, you will be able to prove the worth of your valuables. In addition, you may need to photograph and/or video your entire collection. If possible, make sure that the date stamp is imprinted on the photo(s) or displayed on the video. This will help to prove the authenticity of the images if necessary in the future. As a final step to documenting your collection, you can take a written inventory of each piece, including a detailed description and value.

Once you have all of the necessary paperwork and information gathered, it’s important to store the appraisal, your insurance policy and any written, photographed or video documentation relating to your collection, in a safe place. Every individual family has a preference when it comes to where to store their important paperwork. Whether it be inside of your home in a lockbox or in a safety deposit box at your local bank, it’s wise to keep this information in a place that you know it will be safe and easily accessible by you or your family.

In case you are wondering why this type of coverage is important, it’s worth nothing that the price of precious metal is significantly on the rise and has been so for some time now. With no immediate turn in sight, experts predict that the value of precious metal will continue to grow. Many of us hear that gold is rising in price, but you may not realize that sterling silver is also increasing in value.

While this may seem like a lot of work now, it will prove to be worthwhile in the event of an unforeseen occurrence that may result in the loss of your collection. Just as you would insure anything of value, it’s important to make sure that your jewelry is covered. Instead of assuming that your collection is protected under your current policy, it’s important to confirm this by either reviewing a copy of your policy or by speaking with your local insurance agent. While hopefully you will never need to enforce the coverage, it will provide you with great peace of mind just in knowing that it is there.

Piling on the Sparkle With Stack Rings

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

For years, the popularity of the stack ring has continued to grow. Whether you’re wearing them as a standalone band or as a set, the comfort and style of this delicate design is hard to overlook. In this article, we will take a look at several different types of stack rings and how they can work together to create one fantastic look.

Eternity Band. As the name implies, an eternity band is endless. Typically adorned with either genuine gemstones or cubic zirconia, this popular style offers the wearer a continual circle of sparkle. An eternity band is terrific when worn alone, as part of a wedding set or when paired with polished band rings for a bold look.

Scattered Stone Band Ring. At first glance, the scattered stone band may look similar to that of a wide polished band ring. Upon a closer inspection, however, the sparkle of ‘scattered’ stones set into the band gives a whole new appearance to this trendy style. A scattered stone band can feature either clear or colored gemstones, and looks terrific when paired with either an eternity or polished stack ring.

Polished Stack Ring. A typical stack ring looks very similar to a thin wedding band. Available in both gold and sterling silver, these popular bands can be worn with anything. Whether you prefer to wear them as a standalone ring, paired with an engagement ring and worn as a wedding set, or even exclusively as a wedding band, there are many different ways to wear this single style.

Textured Stack Ring. Unlike a polished stack ring, a textured ring can be either diamond-cut or have a design etched into the band. A textured ring looks perfect when paired with a polished band on the top and bottom, which allows the sparkle of the textured band to shine in the center.

When it comes to sizing stack rings, it’s important to note which styles are sizable and which are not. A qualified jeweler can resize both gold and sterling silver, but not all styles can be resized. For instance, an eternity band with gemstones cannot be resized due to the presence of the gems. An all-metal polished band, on the other hand, can easily be resized by your local jeweler. The only exception is if that band has gemstones set into the design, such is the case with a scattered stone design. Again, because the gemstones are set into the band, it cannot be resized. When purchasing rings, especially online, it’s a good idea to know your ring size before placing the order. This will help to avoid any disappointment in having to return the item. If you need help figuring out your ring size, simply visit your local jeweler and he/she can provide a sizing guide to help you choose the perfect fit every time.

If you are in the market for stack rings, you may find that you can create an impressive collection by purchasing your accessories in sterling silver. With the prices of gold rapidly on the rise, sterling silver remains an affordable precious metal choice for those who want to purchase a piece of jewelry that can last a lifetime. When shopping for sterling silver, look for the .925 hallmark indicating that the piece is, in fact, genuine sterling silver.

Scarves & Shawls -The Latest In Dating Fashion

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

The latest in scarves and shawls dating fashion accessories.

Every year something new seems to hit the runway coupled with a few blasts from the past. It’s inevitable that the new looks will be just that—completely new. But fortunately, some of those old looks are favorites and work well with the new colors, styles, and fabrics infused into the old each year. You’re surely not going to be bored with the newest (and oldest) fashions this year.

Here are a few of the best no-fail items you must have in your wardrobe:

A cool hat, stylish shawls, or unique hair accessory.

Ponytail tubes from Louis Vuitton are a great choice, too.

Splurge on that pair of heels you have been eyeing

Single shouldered dresses will be a mainstay this year.

For this season, buy a low slung, long strapped bag or a tiny one for your palm. There are some fabulous scrunchy clutches/bags this year too.

Go for the monochrome look, but gold is very popular as well.

Can you master the baggy pants this year? If not, consider the asymmetric styles of skirts that don’t belong in the short or long category. However, it seems the mini has faded once again.

There are several pretty ruffled princess dresses, with ribbons and lace. Bows have made a comeback, as well.

When you consider blazers or jackets, all the styles seem popular this year, whether they feature mannish cuts or cropped sleeves. Embellishments of all sorts seem to be allowed almost anywhere… a cashmere or pashmina shawl. You’ll find everything from feathers and fringing to ruffles and bows as well.

Colors this year are from two varied ends of the spectrum. You’ll find bright neons that almost require a cool pair of sunglasses, to blushed sheers and shades of nude. The nude shades are featured in some of the blousy, cropped trousers that can be found everywhere this year. Every shade of blue and green, often worn all at the same time, is definitely in this season. Crumpled fabrics and cutouts could be located on just about every runway show, as well.

Long skirts, very short shorts, jumpsuits and harem pants were seen virtually everywhere. There was a feel of the East in many of the styles. Metallic leather was also popular on several runways. Leggings are back yet again, but sometimes they almost looked rather baggy. Tight leggings are still in as well, so no matter how they fit you in them you’ll want some in your closet.

Jewelry is huge and it’s not just in popularity. The earrings and necklaces are very large and some are rather stunning. However, pearls are also popular. There is a very retro type feel to some of the featured lines. The eighties, seventies, and even the twenties have been highlighted by one designer or another.

Your feet certainly won’t thank you this year, as heels are higher than ever. Heels are seen with every look from formal to casual. Gold is a must have this season. Many outfits seemed to be built around one flashy gold element. All in all, it’s a very exciting year fashion wise. The mood about the economy may be somber but the mood in the fashion world is cheerful and optimistic.

The latest in dating and current fashion accessories always seem to include pashmina or silk shawls. These trendy garments are chic, stylish and great looking. To find hundreds of these beautiful shawls, check out the top rated website at: www.FashionScarvesAndShawls.com., you’ll find many gorgeous women’s and mens scarfs and shawls.

Tips on How to Store Your Silver Cubic Zirconia Jewelry

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Taking care of your silver – cubic zirconia jewelry is not such a difficult thing. Sterling silver in itself is a very resilient metal. It can usually stand up to a lot of stress without cracking or breaking. On the other hand, cubic zirconia may not be as hard as diamond, but it can certainly carry its own. If you have jewelry made of these fine materials, you know that the beauty of this jewelry will remain intact for a long time. It does not matter if you have simple silver cubic zirconia rings, necklaces, earrings (etc,) or you have the elaborate sets. There are simple steps on how you can take care of this jewelry so that these can last for a long time.

Keep them in their original jewelry cases. Sometimes, silver cubic zirconia jewelry come in sets – and these sets usually come in those lovely velvet lined boxes or cases. Instead of taking out the jewelry and putting them in a jumbled pile inside one jewelry box alone, it would be better to keep them segregated from the rest of your jewelry. This ensures that the set stays as a set, which makes finding and putting on the appropriate jewelry easier tasks to do. Also, this practice makes sure that the gemstones and precious metals you have do not rub against each other, which can cause deep, irreparable scratches.

If you would rather prefer to have them all in one container though, (like jewelry armoire or a very large jewelry box,) try to keep each piece (or matching pieces like earrings) steady by putting rings and earrings in the specially assigned grooved linings. Keep the necklaces suspended on the hanging cupboards of your jewelry box if the box indeed has these. Line your bracelets and bangles flat against the bottom layer; or better yet, keep them suspended on the hanging cupboards as well. If your jewelry box does not have grooved linings or hanging cupboards, you might want to invest in small cloth packets (preferably velvet or any soft fabric) to store your jewelry individually.

Try to color code your cloth packets to denote which ones are earrings and which ones are rings, etc. Let us say that you use the blue colored velvet pouches for your necklaces, while the red ones are for the jade bangles. This way, you do not have to go through your entire collection looking for one jewelry piece to wear. Again, it is important to store pieces individually.

Given some time, you might see your jewelry collection expanding. In which case, it is recommended that you store your pieces according to the materials that these are made from; as opposed to the conventional manner of storing jewelry by their function. Of course, it is still easier to keep earrings with other earrings (for example). However, some fashion jewelry pieces, like those made of plated gold or plated silver have high acidity levels which cause these pieces to deteriorate faster than real gold and sterling silver jewelry. By keeping your pieces according to the materials they are made from, (i.e. sterling silver with sterling silver) you can ensure a longer life span for your entire jewel collection.
